Organic vegetables, organic meats and organic fertilizers have been around for a few years now but today, what is this that we are hearing about organic perfumes? What are they and what are their benefits over regular perfumes?
What does organic mean?
Before we can even grasp the concept of an organic perfume, we first have to understand what organic means. Basically, it is a term that refers to any product whose ingredients are naturally grown without the use of any kind of artificial chemicals.
That said, organic perfume is defined as any fragrance whose ingredients have been manufactured solely from natural products. Essential oils from plants are considered organic, therefore all perfumes that are made only from these ingredients can be considered organic as well.
In addition, they should also not contain animal extracts such as ambergris from whales, nor should they have been tested on any animal.
What is the difference between organic and regular perfumes?
As of this writing, it is not clear as to which standards are followed by organic products of any kind, perfumes included, simply because no international standards have yet been determined.
The organic industry is relatively young and although most countries have already established their own standards, they may not necessarily be the same around the world.
However, when it comes to perfumes, the general rule is that in order to be considered organic, the only items that should appear in the ingredient list are an alcohol base, a preservative, natural essential oils, and vitamin E.
What are the advantages of organic perfumes?
Probably the most noticeable difference is that organic fragrances are more subtle and not as potent as some synthetic fragrances. They are also much gentler on the skin and rarely cause any allergic reactions.
One drawback though is that you might have to reapply it more frequently throughout the day because the scent does not cling as much as a synthetic perfume.
Organic perfumes may also be somewhat more expensive than synthetic ones because it only uses natural ingredients. However, you can apply these perfumes without any guilt because you can be certain that they are completely environment-friendly and have not been a party to any act of animal cruelty, which you can never be sure about with synthetic perfumes.
Today, organic fragrances may still be rather hard to find but as the popularity of the organic industry grows, you can be sure that in the next few years, organic perfumes will be more easily accessible.
