What Does Gardenia Smell Like?

White gardenia flowers in bloom

Gardenia is the creamiest of the white flowers: buttery and lush, with a cool green edge and a suntan-lotion warmth. Like several white florals, the version you smell in perfume is a reconstruction.

What Is the Gardenia Note?

There is no viable gardenia essential oil. The real flower’s scent is heavy and does not survive extraction, so perfumers rebuild it from jasmine, tuberose, tiaré, and creamy lactones to capture the buttery, tropical character.

I wanted to capture the aerial, humid and tropical facets of this majestic flower. The real gardenia scent is heavy.

Gardenia in Perfumery

Gardenia is one of the great heart-note white florals, radiant and long-lasting. It pairs naturally with tuberose and jasmine, with tiaré and creamy coconut for a tropical effect, and with musk for softness.

Where Gardenia Shines

Gardenia FAQ

What does gardenia smell like?

Creamy and buttery, like a lush white flower, with a cool green-mushroomy edge and a warm, coconut-like suntan facet.

Is gardenia natural in perfume?

Almost never. The real flower cannot be viably extracted, so gardenia is reconstructed from jasmine, tuberose, tiaré, and lactones.

What notes pair with gardenia?

Tuberose, jasmine, tiaré, coconut, and musk. No gardenia perfume contains gardenia oil. Our Gucci Flora Gorgeous Gardenia review looks at what one is built from instead.
