What Does Gardenia Smell Like?

White gardenia flowers in bloom

Gardenia is the creamiest, most voluptuous of white flowers — buttery and lush, with a cool green edge and a suntan-lotion warmth. Like several white florals, the version you smell in perfume is a perfumer’s clever reconstruction.

What Is the Gardenia Note?

There is no viable gardenia essential oil — the real flower’s scent is heavy and does not survive extraction. Perfumers rebuild it from jasmine, tuberose, tiaré, and creamy lactones to capture its buttery, tropical character.

I wanted to capture the aerial, humid and tropical facets of this majestic flower. The real gardenia scent is heavy.
